Jonas E. Salk (October 28, 1914 – June 23, 1995) was an American medical researcher and virologist, best known for his discovery and development of the first safe and effective polio vaccine.
He first came to my attention in Michael Moore’s Capitalism – where viewers are reminded of Salk who, having perfected the polio vaccine, refused to pursue a patent for his work! In an interview (which Moore included) Salk explained that he made a good living and didn’t need any more money. He mostly wanted to improve the lives of children by getting the vaccine out as quickly as possible.
